The departure areas lie in three directions from the French Quarter, from 25 minutes south to about 35 miles east. This page sets out the drive to each one, plus the tours that collect you in the Quarter or at your hotel instead.

No departure area sits more than about an hour from the French Quarter, and the distances sort themselves by direction. The closest water is south of the river: the docks at 6601 Leo Kerner Lafitte Parkway and 4757 Orleans Way in Marrero are given as 25 minutes from the city, and New Orleans & Company puts the Barataria Preserve entrance at 6588 Barataria Blvd 30 minutes outside the Quarter. Shuttle schedules add more to the day than the mileage does.
The docks fall into three directions out of the city, east, south and west.
The eastern run is the simplest drive of the three. Take I-10 East for about 35 miles, come off at exit 263, then finish on a two-mile stretch of US-90 East, which lands you at the dock area at 55345 US-90, Slidell. Parking is on site, and the operator's own page sets check-in at 30 minutes before departure.
South of the river the roads are slower and the distances shorter. The boat departure at 9706 Barataria Blvd in Marrero wants you there at least 20 minutes before the tour time, since the boats leave on schedule and cannot hold the start for a late arrival. The entrance to the Lafitte airboat facility on Fleming Park Road catches people out: turn right on Texas Street, the next right, rather than into Fleming Park Rd itself.
Westward, the LaPlace cluster sits about 25 miles from New Orleans, with the refuge dock on Frenier Road and the zipline course at 301 Peavine Rd, where every participant arrives 30 minutes before the start time. Leave slack in any of these drives from June through November, which is hurricane season, and in spring, when frequent afternoon thunderstorms can keep boats off the water. Confirm arrival windows and departure times on the day you travel.

If the 35 miles out to the Slidell dock area is the part you would rather hand over, this tour runs 5 hours from $76, rated 4.9 ★ (7171 reviews), collects you at 317 North Rampart Street and puts someone else behind the wheel.

Tours with transport use one of two systems: a single central pickup point in the Quarter, or hotel pickup and drop-off. The Honey Island boat tour with transport takes the first approach. Stand outside the Homewood Suites French Quarter at 317 North Rampart Street as your pickup window opens, because the shuttle departs promptly. Match your boat to its window before you set an alarm: the 9:30 AM departure is collected at 8:00 AM, the 12:15 PM at 10:15 AM, the 2:45 PM at 1:15 PM and the 5:00 PM at 3:30 PM.
The large airboat with transport works the other way round, with hotel pickup and drop-off in the listing. That spares you the walk to Rampart Street, and it adds a collection round through other hotels. Some boat listings cover downtown New Orleans hotels only, so check which address applies to you before you count on a lobby pickup.
Two other central meeting points matter if a boat deck is not the plan. The Manchac kayak shuttle loads at The Rampart Tree House, 740 N Rampart Street, so count back one hour and 15 minutes from your tour time to know when you need to be standing there. The swamp boat and Oak Alley day boards at the Gray Line Lighthouse at Toulouse Street and the Mississippi River, one block from Jackson Square, with check-in 15 minutes before boarding; that operator's central office is at 400 Toulouse Street.
Pickup rounds are what turn a two-hour boat ride into a half day. Distances run from 25 minutes to about 35 miles, and the shuttle timetable decides how much of your day goes with it: the Honey Island boat tour with transport is listed at 5 hours door to door, with collection running 90 minutes to two hours ahead of the boat, so the 12:15 PM departure has you on the kerb at 10:15 AM. The large airboat with transport is listed at 4 hours 15 minutes.
Driving yourself cuts both legs of that round out of the day. You are then timing the road and the check-in deadline at the dock.
| Way to the dock | Total time away | How early you need to be there | Parking at the dock | Who drives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swamp and Bayou Boat Tour with Transportation, Honey Island flat-bottom boat, from $76, 4.9 ★ (7171 reviews) | 5 hours | At 317 North Rampart Street as the window opens: 8:00 AM for the 9:30 AM boat, 10:15 AM for 12:15 PM, 1:15 PM for 2:45 PM, 3:30 PM for 5:00 PM | Not needed | The shuttle |
| Large Airboat Swamp Tour with Transportation, from $90, 4.9 ★ (2132 reviews) | 4 hours 15 minutes | In the lobby for hotel pickup, with drop-off included at the end | Not needed | The shuttle |
| Driving yourself and checking in at the dock | Boat time plus the road both ways: about 35 miles each way to the Slidell dock area, 25 minutes each way to Marrero | 30 minutes before departure at the Honey Island dock area, at least 20 minutes at the Marrero departure on Barataria Blvd | On site at the dock | You |

Drive if anyone in your party can. You choose the departure that suits your morning, and you skip the collection round altogether. Set out early enough to cover the road and still make check-in, which is 30 minutes before departure at the Honey Island dock area and at least 20 minutes at the Marrero boat, with the first boats of the day leaving at 9:30 AM.
Take a tour with transport if nobody in the group is driving, or if you are staying in the Quarter without a car and would rather not pick one up for half a day. No official source we could open describes a bus or transit route to any swamp dock, so a shuttle seat is the realistic option when the keys are not yours. The boat and airboat tours with transport run about 4 to 5 hours door to door, and the mileage out to Honey Island explains the longer figure.
On timing, take the earliest slot you can get between June and September, when highs sit in the low 90s F and the heat index can reach 110°F on an open or lightly covered deck. If you can pick the month, travel in October or November, when average highs sit in the 60s F, lows in the 40s-50s F and rain comes less often, which keeps both the road and the deck comfortable. Keep insect repellent in the car whatever the month, since the Park Service reports mosquitoes active most of the year in these wetlands.
Take a tour that includes round-trip transport. No official page we could open describes a bus or transit route to any of the docks, and the departure areas sit 25 minutes to about 35 miles outside the French Quarter. The Honey Island boat tour with transportation collects at 317 North Rampart Street, and the large airboat includes hotel pickup and drop-off.
Parking is on site at the Honey Island dock area at 55345 US-90 in Slidell, where the operator sets check-in at 30 minutes before departure. On the self-drive alligator cruise option in Lafitte, check-in is near the dock by the main office building, and staff hand out a wristband with your boat number. Follow the signs for the swamp tour as you pull in.
Not necessarily. One swamp boat listing specifies pickup from downtown New Orleans hotels only, while the Honey Island boat tour with transportation uses a single collection point at 317 North Rampart Street rather than individual hotels. Check the pickup wording on the tour page against where you are staying, especially if you are outside downtown.
Work backwards from the check-in deadline. For the Honey Island dock area that is 30 minutes before departure, on top of about 35 miles of I-10 East and the two miles of US-90 East after exit 263. For the Marrero departure at 9706 Barataria Blvd you need to be there at least 20 minutes early, with a drive given as 25 minutes from the city.
Most of those routes are closed. Driving the 30 minutes to 6588 Barataria Blvd will not get you onto the Bayou Coquille and Marsh Overlook boardwalk: that route, most other preserve trails and the Visitor Center have been shut since 2 February 2026 while Hurricane Ida repair work runs, and the National Park Service puts that work at about two years, taking in the 2026 and 2027 seasons. A boat or kayak departure is how you get out over the water in those years.
